Jean Grey : The Biggest Revelation in ‘X-Men Apocalypse’

When X-men Apocalypse revealed its cast to the public through some trailers, the public was then quick to point out how lackluster the cast is compared to the previous installment. Personally I also would have preferred the original cast, Halle Berry still is the best storm there is, a perfect storm indeed. But to re-cast the characters was a necessary call since the movie is set on a different timeline, when our favorite mutants were still new to their powers, thus it would be awkward if the 40+ year old actors and actresses would portray roles of high schoolers. And what stirred the criticism more was whether Hugh Jackman would return as wolverine on this timeline or not. (Spoiler: yes, Jackman is still wolverine!)

In the previous installment, Jennifer Lawrence’s character Mystique has been given a huge part in the script, almost up to par with Wolverine’s importance in the series. Given the fact that there would be less to minimal scenes for Wolverine, give or take the fans are expecting this movie to ride on Mystique’s and Jennifer Lawrence’s popularity, since majority of the new cast are still not so known to the public eye.

But man, watching the movie made me fanboy over Jean Grey. Grey’s character in the movie gave fans a different take on the character. Grey based on the previous movies was so self-composed and self-aware, as if she has everything under her control (until then Dark Phoenix happened). This movie’s portrayal of Grey by Sophie Turner was exciting and raw. It showed a vulnerable and scared Jean, afraid of her psychic powers, afraid that she might lose control and afraid of what more she is capable of doing, totally opposite of Famke Janssen’s portrayal of the role.

As the young X-men were fighting off against the 4 horsemen: Nightcrawler vs. Archangel, Beast vs. Psylocke, Cyclops vs. Storm, and Quicksilver and Mystique TALKING some sense to Magneto (yes they just talked), then later on facing off Apocalyse, Jean Grey was just left at the backstage. Standing quietly at the backstage as everyone was busy fighting for their lives.

But it was not until Charles Xavier (already bald) had an intense mind battle with Apocalypse. Before Wolverine messed up the timeline in Days of the Future Past, it was known that Jean’s power is stronger than Charles’ as shown in X-Men: The Last Stand when the Phoenix finally took over her, as it was repressed by Charles’ psychic abilities. This time it is different. When Charles was losing to Apocalypse in their mind battle, she calls to Jean for help, and to just let it go.

Yes, it was the same as how Elsa let her powers come out in Disney's Frozen. And what’s more amazing is that how this young Jean showcased the same power and same magnitude with the Phoenix. Because of this, Jean Grey earned the limelight and Sophie Turner becoming the biggest revelation in this movie.

Sophie Turner (born 21 February 1996) is an English actress. Turner made her professional acting debut as Sansa Stark on the HBO fantasy television series Game of Thrones (2011-present), which brought her international recognition and critical praise. For her performance, she has received four nominations for Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, as well as a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Supporting Young Actress in a TV Series. and a nomination for the EWwy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.(wikipedia.org)

As mentioned above, Turner was known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. But in the movie, she was completely unrecognizable as Sansa, she was completely absorbed in her character as Jean Grey.

Though lackluster as it may seem, the cast have earned their place in the next installment of the movie series. We can’t wait to see how Jean’s character would be played forward, showcasing the Phoenix’s power so early.

And the next biggest revelation would be how Charles lost all his hair. See it in the movie yourself as it hits the American theaters on the 27th. ;)
