Siquijor Travelog: Getting There
Among the country’s 7,107 islands (or more
as they say), how many have you visited?
How well have you spent your summer?
Tight budget? Tight schedule? For sure,
you haven't considered Siquijor yet - not until you finish reading this 5-part
blog post.
Me, together with my former college boardmates
residing all over Mindanao, 1 from Cebu and 1 from Manila have decided to
extend our summer vacation by having a trip to the Mystic Island of Fire - the
Province of Siquijor. This is our Siquijor Travelog
Siquijor is the third smallest province in the country, in terms of population as well as land area (after Camiguin and Batanes). For a time it was part of Negros Oriental.
During the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines, the Spaniards called the island Island of Fire (Spanish: Isla del Fuego). Siquijor is commonly associated with mystic traditions that the island's growing tourism industry capitalizes on.

To get there. You can have any of the
following options:
A ferry trip from Iligan City to Lazi,
Siquijor, which departs on Friday evening.
There is also an approximately 4-hour
ferry trip from Cebu to Siquijor daily.
A ferry trip from Dumaguete to Siquijor
is also available daily.
Since I am from Oroquieta City, I
decided to take this last route, from Plaridel to Siquijor. It is a 6-hour
ferry trip every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, departing at 12nn. The ferry
will dock in Larena Port, a municipality in the province.
Our own-made two-day itinerary starts on
Saturday. Our other friends would arrive on Friday and some on Saturday
morning. Yet we arrived on Siquijor on Thursday evening since the next accessible
trip for us would then be Sunday, the last day of our itinerary. So me and my 2
friends don't have anything on schedule to do for Friday - not until our
spontaneity kicks in.
To be continued in Siquijor Sojourn II :
Spontaneity
PS.
If you're wondering about our accommodation,
our family owns a house in Tacloban, Siquijor, Siquijor since we've lived there
for 5 years.
